What Customers Say About The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady:

The other two are just fine as well. I'm not really a jazz fan. Fantastic. This is easily in my top five favorite albums of all time. This album however transcends jazz. Solo Dancer and Group Dancers are two of the most amazing songs I've ever heard from 0:00 to finish.

Repeatedly. Not just a brilliant album, but one you'd really listen to. But it's also both a good listen and a crazy sexy soundtrack. I also find it an excellent album to convince the intelligent "rock" music listener of the merit of the big name jazz acts.

If you enjoy Jazz but don't have this Mingus CD you are really shorting your good taste. I bought this as a gift for my daughter who has an extensive library of music and a very eclectic taste. It was absolute the right choice.

It shot to the top of my favorite jazz albums list less than 30 minutes after I unwrapped it from the plastic. Perfectly elegant, controlled, soulful rending and tearing. I've been listening to classical music since my early teens, and while my jazz phase is more recent, I can say I've never heard anything in the entire spectrum of music like Black Saint & The Sinner Lady. From the first moment I was hooked, this album is the outpouring of a man's soul to be sure, but like all Mingus I've encountered so far, is always perfectly controlled, the composer/arranger/player Mingus always knows exactly where he's going and what he wants, even in the most riotous and complex passages.

The music itself is dense but vibrant (a swinging take on Ives and/or Stravinsky, maybe). Everybody plays exceptionally well here. Highly recommended. This is the rare album that really deserves the praise it's received. The rhythm section of Mingus and Richmond are criminally underrated.
